Given people in my area are asking nearly this much for shitty old VW dune buggies it seems like a bargain. Actually exactly what I want if I had more that $50 of fun budget right now...

I don’t know. I’ve driven a legends car, and it had maybe the worst handling characteristics of anything I’ve ever driven. Not to say they couldn’t go fast (especially with some sticky rubber), but holy hell was it fighting an unstable car that seemed to never have traction at any end when you wanted it. Granted that the spec BFG radial T/A street tires that the local legends guys ran were also some of the worst modern tires I’ve driven on a car, too.

It looked pretty quick in the video. You could be right, though as you say it may have been the tires. In my opinion, a simple suspension with a lightweight powerful with ok tires can be a decent combination.
